Pyroxenite harzburgite
Intrusive igneous rock
This example of pyroxenite is about as close as you can get to seeing what a mantle rock probably looks like. The black crystal massex are pyroxene, the lighter gray crystals are olivine (they have been partially altered). Blocks of this rock occur in association with large masses of serpentinite that occur in the Coast Ranges of central and northern California. This sample is a beach cobble from the southern end of of the Santa Lucia Range along the Big Sur in Monterey, CA. |
